I wish things were back the way they were.

This morning I asked the guy at work in charge of disaster relief services if he had a decent weekend (I didn't dare say "good" weekend). He sighed and said "no." The man looks like hell. I asked if he had had a chance to relax at all over the weekend, and he just shook his head and told me that he is feeling guilty when he relaxes right now.

I wanted to cry, right then and there. This man is one of my favorite people in the office. He jokes with everyone, has a habit of leaving mocking little messages on sticky notes in other people's cubicles, has everyone in stitches with stories about his neighbours, ooos and ahhs and plays with my volunteers' dogs (my volunteers are seniors-- their pets are like their babies, and they like to bring them to the office to show them off). He is just generally is one of the reasons why I like my office.

I hate that I barely recognize that guy in the stressed out, serious, and sad man running around the office. Because not only are things not as fun at work anymore (or fun at all, really), it is representative of the bigger picture. Things have changed in the world around me, and I don't like it. I want things back the way they were.
