2001-05-14 - 9:47 p.m.� Yesterday was Mother's Day, and I meant to write an entry on the subject. I did not get around to it because I was tired and bloated from eating too much Mother's Day fudge. Better late that never though, that's what I always say. So here we go... A few years ago my mom and I were cleaning through the china cabinet and we came across the big books of "School Treasures" that my mom had kept for us. Mom, being the sappy and nostalgic person that she is, eagerly began going through them, reminiscing on the days before her children got all big and surly. We came across a Mother's Day card that my brother had made for her in Kindergarten. The assignment had obviously been to write and illustrate one reason why you love your mom. My brother, with the wisdom and love that only a 5 year old can possess, wrote the following: "I love my mom because she puts a fried egg on my plate." It is in the spirit of that card that I would like to present some of the reasons why I love my mom. 1) Because she saves things like Mother's Day cards we made her in Kindergarten. 2) Because she isn't afraid to giggle with me like a couple of idiots in public if the mood strikes us. 3) Because she does motherly things like baking fudge for her kids on a Saturday afternoon. 4) Because she does very unmotherly things like yelling her love to Gord Downie at a Tragically Hip concert. 5) Because she sings to the cat. 6) Because she still sings to me (even though I am often annoyed by this). 7) Because she always buys me Christmas and birthday presents that I actually want, no matter how silly and frivolous, and never buys me things that she thinks I should want. 8) Because if I let her read this, I know that she will get all teary-eyed and sentimental. 9) Because she honestly loves hokey things like playing "a family game" of Clue or Scrabble. 10) Because she is my mom.
