Catching up on marriage gossip

I ran into someone I knew in high school today. Someone I actually liked in high school. Which, you know, was such a small fraction of the people I knew in high school.

We exchanged gossip, which mainly consisted of "You remember so-and-so? She's married/getting married." And then there was a shocking, "Remember him? He's a daddy now."

I found it a little disturbing, and not just because I can barely imagine any of the people I went to high school with as being old enough to be married. I found it odd, and somewhat wrong that marital status was the most interesting tidbit to mention about anyone. If not actually the most interesting tidbit, it was certainly treated as such. It was the first thing either of us mentioned about old acquaintances. Not, "So-and-so is living in Europe and has a modelling career" (that came after the "She's married!"). Or "Remember so-and-so? She graduated with honours and is a chemist now" (I didn't even remember to share that one until after the conversation ended and it was too late).

I did find it somewhat reassuring that this woman was also single and unattached, just as I was. It's nice to know that there are other unaffliated souls out there. Sometimes it feels like everyone is paired off but me. And although I'm not even entirely sure I want to be paired off, at least not right now, it's nice to know I'm not a total freak... at least not for those reasons anyway.

Another thing I found a little disturbing about my conversation was the lack of people I am still in touch with from high school. It's a little sad, really. Although I hated a good number of the people I went to high school with, there were a bunch that I really liked. I should really try to track some of them down.
