I'm not aggressive, damn it!

Mom: Next time I go to the eye doctor's I am definitely bringing you along. You'll make him tell me exactly what's going on. You're aggressive.

Me: I believe the polite term is "assertive."

Mom: See? That's what I mean!

So, the news about my mother's eyesight was not exactly stellar. That is, what little info the specialist saw fit to share with my mother was not great. He really didn't tell her much. She has cataracts in both eyes, glaucoma, and such severe myopia that it is actually damaging her eyes, not just her vision. Plus he said something about her eyes being oddly shaped, which is the apparant cause of all this.

He refused to elaborate on how severe the degeneration will be, or on what could be done to help or even slow down the problems. He said that she could have cataract surgery, but first she has to have another test to see if the surgery will actually improve her vision. She has to wait until February for that test. My mother thinks that at that appointment he will tell her more of what she can expect, and what treatments are available.

I will be going along to make sure that we actually get the information we need. I really wish she had let me come along to this appointment. I don't know how much more info I could have pulled, but at least I would have made sure that he treated my mother like a sound-minded adult who didn't need to be coddled to. She said that she felt like he was trying to protect her from knowing exactly what was going on. This makes sense. He is used to dealing with the elderly. I know; probably every single day I go to work I arrange for at least one of my very elderly clients to have transportation to his office.

My mother is not elderly. And she needs to know what she is going to be dealing with.

Surprisingly, none of us are too worked up over any of this. We aren't much further ahead than where we were after her eye appointment a few months ago. There isn't much point in getting too upset until we know exactly what is coming.

Other than that, I've had a good few days. Work was alright this week, and I've been having fun outside of work seeing friends, baking and eating Christmas treats, watching cartoons, and just generally enjoying myself. I feel like I'm on vacation already. I still have another day and a half of work before my vacation officially starts, but I don't even mind that much.
