2001-05-07 - 9:36 p.m.� I spent most of my afternoon at work today cutting letters out of construction paper and then pasting them onto the volunteer division's bulletin board display. Now I know what you're thinking: Heather must surely hold a University degree in English Lit to be qualified enough to handle that prestigious task! Damn right. Not that I'm complaining too bitterly... I sort of chose the cut and paste detail over my normal job today. Decorating the bulletin board was more fun than entering the scheduling charts into the computer, which is what I would have been doing otherwise. It's just that when I'm doing these things I do have opportunity to start questioning my life. Did I ever once in my life picture myself doing this for a living? No, of course not. Did anyone ever grow up thinking, "I want to be a Scheduling Clerk!" "I want to answer the phone all day long! I want to file, and enter data into computers." I do like my job. As far as jobs go, this is a good one. The office politics are kept to a mininum. The coworkers are nice, the stress level is fairly low. The pay is fairly good. Most of the time I feel like I get to make a difference in the world. Still, I have to wonder if this is how I am going to spend the rest of my life. This is not how I want to spend the rest of my life. I want to be a writer. I want to travel. I want to live in a nice house or condo. I want to live in a different city. I want... more than this.
