2005-08-29 - 7:52 p.m. We got out a little later than planned on our first day of driving back home. We also encountered a great deal of construction. All in all, we ended up a couple hours behind schedule, which meant that we were coming dangerously close to driving through moose country in the dark. There have been a lot of moose related accidents (and deaths) this summer up in the region we were driving through. The moose come out onto the road at night, drivers don't see them in time, and wham! Dead moose, dead motorists. We were driving along feeling more nervous as dusk approached. All along the way we had been seeing signs like these: Aren't they delightful? The moose won't just wander out into the road, it will run at you! Moose rampage! There were also lots of signs instructing us to watch for "fallen" rocks. Not "falling" rocks, "fallen" rocks. We figured the idea there was that there was no point in worrying about falling rocks-- if the rocks started falling you were toast. So there we are, getting warnings that we might fall victim to a rampaging moose, or be crushed from above, and what do we see? A cheerful billboard placed on the side of the road, presumably by a local church group, that read: "PREPARE TO MEET THY GOD" I kid you not. Nice timing guys, really.
