2004-01-08 - 11:24 p.m.� Someone at my office got fired today. No, not fired, downsized. No, not downsized, her position was streamlined for the efficiency of the company. Gotta love how the terminology just keeps getting more and more sterile and removed from the truth of the matter. I guess it goes without saying that everybody was tense and upset after we got the news. It's never fun to hear that someone has been let go, even if it's someone who more or less deserves it. This woman did not deserve it. What's more, I can honestly say that I like her, no ifs ands or buts. I can't say that about everyone I work with. After work while I was waiting for a friend to pick me up, the big boss man came up to me on his way out and asked me what the mood on the floor was. I don't know why I'm always the one that he asks that of. Does he think I'm a gossip? I told him in all honesty that I hadn't really talked to many people about it, but that anytime something like this happens, we all get anxious about our own job security. I asked him point blank if I should be concerned about my own job. He said no, definitely not. Even if there are more cutbacks, the job I do will always be essential to the company, provided they don't cut out my program altogether (which they are definitely not planning on doing). I really want to believe him. It's just that it's sort of hard to take any sort of comfort and security about that sort of thing on a day where you watched a coworker escorted out of the building.
